A BRIEF RECENT HISTORY
Civil war in Liberia began in 1989 and lasted more than 14 years, marked by massive levels of destruction and violence that affected the entire population. The conflict was brought to an end with a peace agreement signed in late 2003 among the three major warring factions. This launched a two-year transitional period in which the United Nations Integrated Mission, led by the UN Mission in Liberia, along with other humanitarian agencies, was mandated to stabilize and improve the security and humanitarian situation. Poverty is still rampant, and many Liberians still struggle to rebuild their homes in the face of enormous challenges. Support is required, yet some degree of independence must be encouraged in order to revive self-respect and motivation.
The war destroyed most of Liberia's schools, along with any books or other educational materials, suspending any opportunity for formal education for most Liberian families. It is estimated that the illiteracy rate among the population is over 70%. There is an urgent need to raise private sector funds and provide other practical assistance, channeled through organizations such as HCA that can truly make a difference, for even a minimum of education to be offered to Liberia's children and young adults.
A NATION'S HOPE FOR THE FUTURE IS IN THE EDUCATION OF ITS CHILDREN
Hope For Children of Africa (HCA) offers an effective approach toward empowering people to improve their lives through implementing educational programs that are customized for the target population. Involving local staff with an understanding of the needs of their community leads to success and self-sufficiency. HCA provides primary support, through resources and training, that provides a gradual transition to independent, long-term commitment. Once an HCA pilot program is established, local staff take on additional responsibility by training other interested communities to replicate the program. |
