NEWS

March, 2010

Edwards, Colorado, USA -- HCA is awarded a $25,000 grant by the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT).  Funds will help expand the literacy pilot program launched in 2009 to serve rural populations in the interior of Liberia.  The grant is made possible through the efforts of Terry Herron of New Frontier Financial, member of MDRT, in recommending HCA as grant recipient.

As part of the grant, HCA plans to expand the partnership with Liberian educational staff to develop and offer advanced teacher training workshops, build a second library, and further develop literacy and scholarship programs to serve the rural communities of the  Jorquellen district in Liberia.

January - March, 2010

HCA co-founder James Kumahn travels to rural Liberia to visit project sites, monitoring progress and assessing the ongoing needs of the beneficiaries of the literacy project. The library books and resources are a critical factor in providing quality instruction in support of Liberia's curriculum initiatives.  Scholarship funds are needed to help further students' higher education.

Fall, 2009

Opening of the first public library in post-war rural Liberia is announced. The library was funded in part through a grant provided by the Million Dollar Round Table, www.mdrt.org, in early 2009 as part of a pilot program to improve literacy.

The pilot project includes implementation of new instructional methods combined with the use of books, materials and encyclopedias donated to the library.  Teachers reported success in implementing new educational methods and more effective learning using these resources previously unavailable to their schools.  This achievement goes well beyond the anticipated initial success of the library and program implementation.

Winter, 2008

Liberia, West Africa -- HCA representatives visit Liberia to launch a teacher training  pilot program with the community.  The program implementation includes 75 teachers representing 15 schools of Bong County.  This progress comes as a result of HCA's decision to select a rural village school in Samay, Liberia is the first to receive the teacher training pilot program.  Construction of the Samay Library/Community Learning Center and transfer of educational books  will support the teacher training and offer all residents opportunity for literacy. Funds for this project have been generated through the efforts of HCA to raise awareness and build support through US donors to deliver educational opportunities to rural African communities.

Spring, 2007

HCA's volunteers assess educational needs in Liberia with visits to local schools, government organizations, and non-governmental humanitarian organizations.  This visit highlights the clear need for teacher training and supplies for public and rural schools.  As a result, HCA outlined a project to address educational needs. The first phase of the project will create a training workshop for teachers in the interior area of the country, where there is little opportunity for teachers to advance their own professional skills.

Fall, 2007

HCA established partnerships with local non-profit organizations to develop appropriate teacher training workshops and deliver supplies to rural interior areas where the need is the greatest.
